In a significant step toward strengthening Uganda’s and Africa’s DNS resilience, AFRINIC deployed DNS anycast infrastructure at the Uganda Internet Exchange Point (UIXP) on 27 November 2025. The deployment, facilitated by the Uganda DNS Forum in collaboration with AFRINIC, UIXP, and local technical stakeholders, brings critical DNS infrastructure closer to local networks and reinforces Uganda’s role in supporting a secure and resilient Internet ecosystem.
AFRINIC’s DNS programme focuses on improving the stability, security, and performance of the Domain Name System by expanding its authoritative DNS and reverse DNS anycast footprint across the continent. By deploying DNS anycast nodes at UIXP, AFRINIC enables DNS queries originating from Uganda and the surrounding region to be resolved locally, resulting in reduced latency, improved performance, and enhanced resilience against network disruptions.
The Uganda Internet Exchange Point plays a vital role in localizing Internet traffic and strengthening national Internet resilience. Hosting AFRINIC’s DNS anycast infrastructure at UIXP reinforces its position not only as a traffic exchange hub, but also as a strategic location for critical Internet infrastructure. Through facilitation by the Uganda DNS Forum, this deployment brought together regional expertise and local operational capacity to ensure successful implementation.
The Uganda DNS Forum’s role in facilitating this deployment reflects its broader mandate to promote collaboration, capacity building, and infrastructure development within Uganda’s DNS and Internet ecosystem. By supporting engagements between AFRINIC, UIXP, and local network operators, the Forum helped create the conditions necessary for hosting regional DNS infrastructure locally and sustainably.
For Uganda, the presence of AFRINIC DNS anycast nodes at UIXP delivers tangible benefits. Local networks and Internet users benefit from faster DNS resolution, improved reliability, and reduced dependence on external infrastructure. At a broader level, this deployment contributes to national and regional Internet resilience by increasing redundancy and strengthening the underlying systems that support digital services.
This initiative also aligns with AFRINIC’s wider expansion of its anycast footprint across Africa, which in 2025 included deployments at several Internet Exchange Points across the continent. Collectively, these efforts strengthen Africa’s DNS ecosystem while demonstrating the importance of local infrastructure hosting and multistakeholder collaboration.
By facilitating the deployment of AFRINIC’s DNS anycast nodes at UIXP, the Uganda DNS Forum continues to advance its mission of supporting a secure, resilient, and locally anchored DNS infrastructure for Uganda. This milestone underscores the value of partnerships between regional Internet institutions and national community-led platforms in building a stable and inclusive Internet future.
