Uganda DNS Forum Leads National Effort to Accelerate IPv6 Adoption
Train. Certify. Deploy.
Building a resilient, secure and future-ready Internet requires more than technology. It requires collaboration, technical expertise and a shared national vision. As Uganda continues to advance its digital transformation agenda, the Uganda DNS Forum is bringing together government, regulators, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), academia, the private sector and the technical community to strengthen the country’s Internet infrastructure and accelerate the adoption of global Internet standards.
One of the Forum’s flagship initiatives in 2026 was the Uganda IPv6 Certification & Technical Training Programme, held from 21st to 24th July 2026 at the National ICT Innovation Hub in Nakawa, Kampala. Organised by the Uganda DNS Forum in partnership with the Internet Society Uganda Chapter and AFRINIC Academy, the programme marked a significant milestone in Uganda’s journey towards widespread IPv6 adoption and the development of a future-ready Internet.
The programme brought together nearly 50 participants representing Internet Service Providers, telecommunications operators, government ministries and agencies, universities, research institutions, data centres and technology companies. Their participation reflected a shared understanding that the future of Uganda’s Internet depends on strengthening both the country’s technical infrastructure and the expertise of the professionals responsible for building and operating it.
Why IPv6 Matters
The Internet has transformed how governments deliver services, how businesses operate and how people connect. However, the continued growth of digital services has placed increasing pressure on the existing Internet addressing system.
Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) was developed to address this challenge by providing a virtually unlimited address space while improving network scalability, routing efficiency and support for emerging technologies. Around the world, IPv6 is enabling the expansion of cloud computing, smart cities, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things (IoT), digital public services and next-generation communications networks.
For Uganda, IPv6 is not simply a technical upgrade. It is an essential building block for sustainable digital transformation. A successful transition will ensure that the country’s Internet infrastructure remains capable of supporting innovation, economic growth and increasing connectivity demands for many years to come.
Building Skills That Enable Deployment
Recognising that successful IPv6 adoption depends on people as much as technology, the Uganda DNS Forum designed the programme to focus on practical implementation rather than theory alone.
Over four intensive days, participants explored IPv6 addressing, routing, transition mechanisms, DNS integration, Internet Routing Security (RPKI), troubleshooting and deployment best practices. Through practical laboratory sessions led by expert trainers from AFRINIC Academy, participants gained the knowledge and confidence required to begin implementing IPv6 within their own organisations.
By investing in technical skills today, Uganda is laying the foundation for stronger and more resilient networks tomorrow.
Collaboration Across Uganda’s Internet Ecosystem
One of the defining characteristics of the programme was its strong multi-stakeholder participation.
The Uganda DNS Forum was honoured to work alongside the Internet Society Uganda Chapter as co-host and AFRINIC Academy as the Certification and Training Partner. The Forum also acknowledges the valuable support of UgNOG, whose contribution continues to strengthen Uganda’s network operator community and promote technical excellence.
The programme further benefited from the partnership of Workonline Communications, whose practical experience in network operations and Internet infrastructure enriched discussions on real-world IPv6 deployment. As the programme’s Technical Tools Partner, KNIPEX reinforced the importance of practical skills and technical precision in building modern network infrastructure.
The Uganda DNS Forum also extends its appreciation to the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) and the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U) for their participation and continued commitment to advancing Uganda’s digital transformation agenda. Their engagement reflects the growing national recognition that future-ready Internet infrastructure is fundamental to economic development and digital inclusion.
Most importantly, we commend every participant whose commitment to learning and professional development is helping build the next generation of Internet leaders in Uganda.
From Capacity Building to National Deployment
While the successful completion of the certification programme represents an important achievement, the Uganda DNS Forum recognises that training is only the beginning.
Real impact will be measured by the successful deployment of IPv6 across Uganda’s public and private sector networks. For this reason, the Forum is working closely with its partners to launch the Uganda IPv6 Deployathon—a practical implementation initiative that will support organisations as they begin deploying IPv6 in live production environments.
The Deployathon will provide technical mentoring, peer learning, deployment guidance and opportunities for organisations to share lessons learned, helping transform newly acquired skills into measurable national progress.
Building a Stronger Internet Together
The Uganda DNS Forum was established to provide a collaborative platform where stakeholders can work together to strengthen the country’s Internet infrastructure through knowledge sharing, technical capacity building and policy dialogue.
As Uganda’s digital economy continues to expand, initiatives such as the IPv6 Certification & Technical Training Programme demonstrate the value of bringing together government, regulators, industry, academia and the technical community around a common purpose.
The Forum remains committed to advancing initiatives that strengthen DNS infrastructure, promote DNSSEC, Universal Acceptance, IPv6 adoption, Internet Routing Security (RPKI) and other critical Internet technologies that underpin a secure, resilient and inclusive Internet.
The successful delivery of the Uganda IPv6 Certification & Technical Training Programme marks not the end of a project, but the beginning of a long-term national effort to prepare Uganda for the next generation of the Internet.
